1823  Birth of Dorman Eaton, American author, lawyer, government reform advocate and bureaucrat. He is said to have coined the term “public relations” in 1882.

1992  Printers strike at the Toronto Star.

1980  National Anthem Act adopted. ‘O Canada’ replaces God Save the Queen. The quirky differences between the French and English versions also appeared at that point.

2003  In the United States, the National Do Not Call Registry begins operations. More than 700,000 persons register on the first day. Service in English and Spanish. Telemarketers immediately launch lawsuits (they fail).

2010  Supreme Court rejects the Canadian government’s appeal in the John Gomery case. Gomery threatens to publish a book.

2030  Webmasters at the Toronto Star go on strike. The Web site is brought back up in four minutes by a team of webscabs in India.
