Today in History 2030 – July 4

1905  Alberta and Saskatchewan created by federal Parliament.

1968  The so-called Zodiac Killer takes his two first victims in California. He is probably the first serial killers to use public relations techniques specifically to draw the attention of the media. The media takes the bait.

1989  Consumer and Corporate Affairs Minister Bernard Valcourt resigns after being charged with drunk driving related to a motorcycle accident. Back in Cabinet two years later. Elected leader of the New Brunswick Progressive Conservative Party in 1995, just in time to preside over the disastrous 1995 election.

2004  The cornerstone of the Freedom Tower is laid on the site of the former World Trade Centre in New York City. Meant as a symbol of American defiance in the face of terrorism, it has been plagued by delays, dithering and costs overruns.

2012  Government Procurement minister Maxime Bernier resigns after he’s found to have repeatedly interfered with hiring processes in his department. Government Procurement now employs 73 percent women.

2030  Freedom Tower completed.
