Today in History 2030 – July 9

1969  The federal Parliament adopts the Official Languages Act. Guarantees services to Canadians in either official language, allows civil servants to work in the language of their choice, creates the position of Commissioner of Official Languages. It’s still a regular topic on Ottawa open-line shows.

1984  John Turner calls a general election for Sept. 4. Turner wants a clear mandate after succeeding Pierre Elliott Trudeau. As it turns out, Canadians give Conservatives the largest majority in history.

1995  Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior II boarded by French commandos as it protests nuclear testing on Pacific island. The French government’s hard stance on Greenpeace helped give visibility for the group’s campaigns.

2012  Greenpeace announces construction of a fleet of double-hulled, mine-proof campaign ships.

2030  Statistics Canada study shows Canadians under 40 years old speak on average 4 languages.
