I don’t think it’s actually the veteran broadcaster’s birthday today, but it’s the date he picked to celebrate his 70 years of life on this planet with a big bash at the Château Laurier.
Not that Me. Oliver is that vain. The Château event tonight is meant as a $300-a-ticket fundraiser for the Ottawa Eye Institute (Oliver is mostly blind). Good for him. “Giving back to the community” is an old cliché, but it doesn’t sound hollow in this context.
Hopefully, Oliver will also announce his retirement from broadcasting. Let’s face it, the time for Oliver to gracefully step back into the shadows has passed years ago, ideally before he started screaming at federal party leaders during the 2004 debate. The best he can do now is to ride away in the sunset before he really embarrasses himself.
